BACKGROUND:
Upbringing: Coco Chanel was born on August 19, 1883 in Saumur, France. Her birth name was Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel. In her early years, her mother passed away, which resulted in Chanel being put in an orphanage by her father. She was then raised by nuns. The nuns taught her how to sew which actually helped her with her life career. The nickname "Coco" came from a club that she used to sing/ perform at. Chanel herself said, her name was actually a shortened version of the word Cocotte which meant "Kept women". Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel died January 10, 1971 in Paris, France.
Education: Up until the age of 17, Gabrielle was educated through the Convent Orphanage in Aubazine. After leaving Aubazine, she then spent 2 more years at another convent school at Moulin's. Gabrielle learned how to sew and also about the art of millinery.
Previous Careers: Coco started out as a singer at clubs before her interest in clothing and fashion arose. In 1913, Coco opened up her very own shop in Paris, selling hats and a small line of clothing garments. In the 1920s, she launched her very first perfume , "Chanel No. 5". All throughout the 1920's, she launched many different styles of clothing, perfumes, and began to grow her business.
