Gaul was then conquered by Rome during the first century BCE, which eventually resulted in Gaul adopting the Roman culture and their language as well. Gaul is where France derived their modern name. In the year of 843, The treaty of Verdun created "Western Francia", a territory which was the precursor to modern day France. France was ruled by many noble families until the day that the monarchy was overthrown during the French Revolution in 1798. Approximately 10 years after the revolution, Napoleon Bonaparte took control of France, and declared himself the emperor as well. He was able to conquer a huge portion of Europe before he was finally defeated at the Battle of Waterloo. Overall, France suffered many huge losses during the First World War, despite being on the winners side. The Nazis then took over during World War II. The country then joined powers with the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada towards 1944.
