Hugh Marston Hefner was born on April 9, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois. His parents were Grace and Glenn Hefner, and he is the oldest of two sons. His family were strict Methodists, and had deep Midwestern roots. In high school, teachers said he wasn't very enthusiastic although his IQ was 152. Also he founded his school's newspaper.
After serving two years in the U.S. Army at the end of WWII, he was discharged and studied at the Chicago Art Institute. After two years there, he attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he majored in psychology. He earned his bachelors degree in 1950.
Right of out college, Hefner already had an entry-level job at the Chicago office of Esquire magazine. Hefner was only there until 1953, he left the magazine because he was denied a $5 raise.
